Prevention
Prevention and early detection is the key to our pet’s happy lives. Preventative medicine is very important because animals age 5 – 7 times quicker than people. Even though our feline friends may seem healthy, yearly exams can be very informative because cats are very good at hiding their illnesses until they are extremely sick. Weight loss of a pound in a cat or small dog can be equivalent to a human losing about 10 pounds. Sometimes the pet will not show any visible signs but when examined and have simple tests performed, can reveal valuable information for lurking problems. Education on internal parasites such as heartworms and intestinal worms and external parasites such as fleas and ticks, are just some parasites that can carry harmful diseases. With programs designed especially for you and your pet, we can prevent some diseases from causing serious problems. We are here to ensure you and your pet has a long lasting relationship.
Fecal Exams
Even though you may not see anything in your pet’s bowel movements, microscopically there maybe something hiding in there. That’s why fecal exams are very important annually or biannually depending on your pet’s life style. There are intestinal parasites that can be transmitted to humans and cause problems especially in children. So don’t forget to bring us a sample so we can run easy test that prevents serious problems.
Heartworm
Heartworm prevention is easier than the treatment. Heartworms can cause disease in cats and dogs. In dogs the treatment and disease can be deadly. In cats there is no treatment that is approved by the FDA. Cats are relatively resistant to heartworms but it can only take one – two worms to cause serious disease. This is why Heartworm medicine taken monthly all year round is the best way to prevent this serious disease.
Ticks and Fleas
Ticks and fleas are other parasites that can carry serious diseases. Lyme, Erhlichia, Anaplasmosis, and Tapeworms are a just few of these diseases. There are topical medications that are applied monthly to prevent fleas and kill fleas and ticks. Due to the biology of the tick we cannot eliminate them completely, so careful inspection of your dog and cat is also very important.
Dental Hygiene
Dental hygiene is just as important in our pets as it is in our own lives. Just like in people the bacteria in the mouth can get into the blood stream and set up infections in the kidneys, heart and other organs. It has been shown that most pets have some level of dental disease as young as 2-3 years of age. There are different types of prevention. Ask us about what prevention would be best for you and your pet. Also, ultrasonic dental cleanings can be performed in our office.
